“All is water”

I’m fairly certain no one has ever set any of the text of Paul Tillich’s Systematic Theology to music before.

The song was birthed from the idea that the phrase “a monophysitic dogma of the infallibility of a book” has a certain poetic lilt that would work pretty well sung. These lyrics are adapted from the section on “Final revelation and the Word of God”, in part 1, “Reason and Revelation”. Here they are:

Verse 1:
The Bible is the Word of God in two senses.
It is the document of the final revelation,
And it participates in the final revelation of which it is the document.

Refrain:
But if the Bible is called the Word of God,
Confusion is almost unavoidable.
Such consequences follow, from such an identification,
As the dictation theory of inspiration,
Dishonesty in dealing with the biblical text,
A “monophysitic” dogma of the infallibility of a book.

Verse 2:
The Bible is the document of the final
Revelation and its special preparation.
Probably nothing has contributed more to the misinterpretation of the biblical doctrine
Of the Word than the identification of the Word with the Bible [in its written form].

Refrain:
‘Cause if the Bible is called … etc.

Also, this was this first time I’d played my guitar in well over three years. Don’t hate.
